Songwriting as Literature

While on the subject of literate song lyrics, I have to mention those of an old friend, Eric Taylor. We've been friends for so long I don't think either one of us wants to tote up the years, but in a way, we began our creative writing careers together.

Eric took the musical trail, and I insisted on the written page. But then this is supposed to be more about him than me.

Eric came of age in the Texas music scene of the '70s and '80s, influenced by Townes Van Zandt and Lightnin' Hopkins, although his music is so very unique. Some commentators liken his lyrics to short stories, and I concur. But they're not long, rambling sagas one might fall to sleep while listening to. Instead, they're pithy, edgy, humorous, romantic, and visionary. I think you'll find it hard to unearth song lyrics that say so much in so few words.

Give his stuff a listen. I suspect you'll be amazed at his work.
