Such a pleasure to see fiction appear once more in The Atlantic's June 2012 issue! And a fine story this one is: "Honors Track," by one Molly Patterson.

The story concerns a group of high school kids busting their mental butts to gain perfect or near-perfect grades, so they would stand a chance of geting into the veddy good Ivy League schools (yes, its East Coast-centric), but a certain calculus class and teacher threatens to spoil their academic plans. I won't spoil the story other than to say it does raise ethical issues.
Patterson teaches at Ohio State, so she sees such kids in action daily; I hope, though, that her stories will soon broaden to examine life outside the classroom.
